Buying Used Recycling Equipment: What to Check Before Ordering from an Overseas Supplier

A buyer's checklist for inspections, trials, electrical compatibility, shipping, commissioning and support.

Used industrial shredder listed by MSR

The machine price is only one line in a cross-border purchase. A low quote can become expensive when the equipment arrives without the right electrical setup, lifting plan, wear parts or commissioning support. Compare the cost of a working machine at your site.

Establish exactly which machine is for sale

  • Match the serial number and nameplate across the quotation, current photos, video and inspection report.
  • Request service history, operating hours where logged, repairs and measurements of high-wear components.
  • Ask for manuals, wiring and hydraulic diagrams, parts list and the conformity documents required at the destination.
  • Commission an independent inspection when the value or travel distance warrants it. Specify what must be opened or measured.

Test the duty, not just a no-load start

Ship representative material, including the difficult fraction. Agree feed mass, test duration, target output size, allowable contaminants and how stoppages are recorded. Ask for continuous footage and a mass balance. If a trial is impossible, price the capacity claim as unverified and make acceptance conditions explicit.

Before paying a depositEvidence to request
Power and controlsVoltage, frequency, phase, installed load, motor and control drawings; a local engineer checks compatibility.
TransportDimensions, mass, lifting points, dismantling scope, packing and agreed delivery term.
CommissioningWho installs, tests, trains operators and corrects defects; travel and accommodation costs.
After-salesNamed contact, remote support hours, spare-part availability and response times.
WarrantyWritten start date, covered parts and labour, exclusions and who pays international freight.

For an EU destination, imported used machinery and substantial modifications can trigger specific conformity obligations. Confirm the applicable rules with a qualified local specialist before shipment rather than treating an old CE plate as a complete answer.

Questions to send the seller

  • Can you provide the serial number, current condition report and full list of work completed?
  • Will you run my material under agreed acceptance criteria and share unedited results?
  • Which components and services are included in the price, shipment and written warranty?
  • What parts are available now, and who will commission the machine at my site?

MSR lists used equipment; request an evidence pack for the specific unit and compare its total landed and commissioned cost with a new alternative.
